The calls started the same week and you do not know what you are allowed to refuse. Part 2 is the rules, in the words you can quote.
This is the last window where you are still a customer in difficulty rather than a recovery file. Part 4 is what to ask for, and how.
60 days to pay, 15 days for a reasoned reply, 45 days to the tribunal. Section 33 and section 42 are the two pages to read tonight.
A guarantor, a spouse, a parent or a friend. Parts 5 to 7 let a second person run the paperwork while the borrower handles the calls.
Six things almost nobody knows before they need them
Recovery contact is allowed only between 8:00 am and 7:00 pm, only with the borrower or guarantor, and never on a bereavement or a medical emergency.
A financed phone can be locked only after 30 days past due, never blocking incoming calls, SMS or SOS, and must be unlocked within an hour of payment. Wrongful locking carries Rs 250 per hour.
60 days on the demand notice, a mandatory reasoned reply in 15, then 45 days to the tribunal from each enforcement measure. Every period, in one table.
Since January 2024 a penalty cannot be a penal interest rate and cannot earn interest. A charge not in your Key Facts Statement cannot be levied without consent.
The five documents to demand before you pay a rupee, what the letter must say, and what happens to your credit report for the next seven years.
Lender's grievance officer, then the RBI Complaint Management System at cms.rbi.org.in. No fee, no lawyer, and up to Rs 1 lakh for harassment.
Seven parts, forty-five numbered sections
The five stages of default, your money map, the charge audit, and how to read your own loan agreement in ten minutes.
The call rules, the visit rule, what changes on 1 January 2027, device locking, app-based loans, repossession, and five claims agents make that are false.
SARFAESI in one page, writing a representation that gets read, court and arbitration, cheque and mandate bounce, arrest myths, and free legal aid.
The 48-hour call script, the four real options compared, restructuring, one-time settlement, selling the asset yourself, consolidation maths, and the settlement-agent scam.
What 'Settled' does to your file, getting it changed to 'Closed', reading all four bureaus, a twelve-month rebuild, and living without new credit.
Credit cards and the minimum-due trap, guarantors and co-borrowers, a death in the family, the first 24 hours after a notice, and fifteen minutes with a lawyer.
The 30-day plan, document checklist, call log sheet, escalation ladder, four letter templates, quick-reference card, glossary and sources.
Most advice on this subject is either panic or folklore. This is neither.

No. A loan is a contract and this book says so plainly. What it does is put the rules, the timelines and the paperwork in one place so you negotiate from knowledge instead of fear — the restructuring options, the settlement process, the recovery conduct limits and the free escalation routes.
Yes. Section 7 sets out what changes on 1 January 2027 — certified recovery agents, the published agency list, the named grievance officer, six months of call recordings and the compensation clause — and section 5 sets out the conduct rules already in force today.
Yes. The recovery conduct directions, the Key Facts Statement rules, the penal charges circular, the digital lending directions and the RBI Ombudsman scheme all cover NBFCs and housing finance companies as well as banks. Where a rule applies only to one type of lender, the playbook says so.
Sections 25 to 28. They explain what a 'Settled' status does to your file for the next seven years and the three-step route to have it changed to 'Closed' once the balance is cleared, plus the 12-month rebuild sequence.
